'Authority has to be a by-product of freedom. Where there is no freedom, there is no authority. The authority that supresses freedom is no authority at all, because it commands no credibility and possesses no authenticity. The authority that is not credible and authentic is nothing but violent power. It violates truth. it violates humanity. It violates God. History tells us how much violence authorities have committed against truth, humanity, and God, not only in the realm of politics but also in the world of religion!'

Choan-Seng Song, Professor of Theology and Asian Studies at the Pacific School of Religion in The Believing Heart: An Invitation to Story Theology (Minneapolis: Fortress Press, 1999).
